As Christians, we often find ourselves questioning the validity of spiritual gifts in today's world. We may have seen people falsely claiming to possess these gifts, or perhaps we haven't experienced them ourselves. But does that mean spiritual gifts have ceased to exist?
The Bible is clear about the existence and purpose of spiritual gifts. In 1 Corinthians 12:4-11, we read, "There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them... Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good." This passage tells us that spiritual gifts are distributed by the Holy Spirit for the benefit of all believers.
Ephesians 5:18-20 encourages us to "be filled with the Spirit," speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. This implies that the Spirit's presence and gifts are meant to be a normal part of the Christian life.
Just because we haven't experienced spiritual gifts ourselves doesn't mean they're non-existent. It's like saying, "I've never seen a tornado in person, so they must not exist." Or, "I've never met a person who's climbed Mount Everest, so it must be impossible." Just because something is rare or outside of our personal experience doesn't mean it can't happen.
If we look at the Bible, we see that miracles and supernatural events were not everyday occurrences, even for the apostles and prophets. They were often rare and significant events that demonstrated God's power and presence.
Let's be careful not to limit God's work in the world based on our own experiences or the actions of others. Instead, let's seek to understand and experience the fullness of the Spirit's presence and gifts in our lives.
As Psalm 78:41 says, "Again and again they tested God, and provoked the Holy One of Israel." Let's not make the same mistake. Let's not put God in a box based on our limited understanding or experiences. Instead, let's trust in His power and sovereignty, and remain open to the supernatural work of the Holy Spirit in our lives.
Spiritual gifts are still valid today, and we should be careful not to limit God's power based on our own experiences or the actions of others. Let's seek to understand and experience the fullness of the Spirit's presence and gifts in our lives, and trust in His power and sovereignty.
